A temporary airspace restriction will be placed on an 80 km radius around OR Tambo international, Bloemfontein and Rustenburg airports from midnight on 13 June until midnight on 28 June. Additional airspace restrictions will be imposed for a radius onf eight kilometres around all the stadiums being used for the tournament. These restrictions will be imposed from two hour before the start of the game until an hour after the final whistle.

Speaking at a press briefing in Midrand earlier today Colin Jordaan, CEO of the Civil Aviation Authority, said, "As would be expected leading up to and during the Confederations Cup, much of the transportation of supporters, players and officials will be by air, and this mode of travel will also feature prominently in many other activities in and around the host cities."

"... the SACAA, with the collaberation of the department of transport, ATNS (Air Traffic and Navigation Services Company), SA Police Services and the SA Air Force needs to ensure that air safety and security measures and in place and properly co-ordinated."

"Unfortunately one of these measures involves airspace retrictions around host cities, prior to, during and after each game."

Charles Norval of ATNS said, "This is not about spoiling anybody's fun. Very few if any (flight) operations will be prohibited. There will be a set of procedures in place [according to] which things will need to be done."

Jordaan said there will be no additional security measures imposed on passengers flying on scheduled flights as the current measures in place at airports were adequate.
