Bakkies out for rest of Tri Nations

Written by Paul Bedford

Springbok lock Bakkies Botha will miss the rest of the 2010 Tri Nations rugby series after receiving a nine-week ban for headbutting Jimmy Cowan in the early part of the game played in Auckland yesterday. The incident that led to Botha's citing was not seen by the on-field match officials.

The All Black scrum half pulled on Botha's jersey as they were chasing a loose ball. Television replays show Botha butting the back of Cowan's head after he had tackled him. Botha admitted the charge.

In passing sentence Sanzar judicial officer Dennis Wheelan took Botha's previous disciplinary record into account. Botha was handed a four-week ban earlier this year for a reckless charged which kept him out of the Super 14 finals.

Botha will be able to resume playing on 5 September 2010, the day after the Sprinboks play their final Tri Nations match.
