Poachers slaughter rhino population

Poachers have killed at least 126 rhinos in game reserves across the country since the beginning of the year. The last remaining adult rhino at the Krugersdorp Game Reserve was found dead on Tuesday morning. The animal's horns had been removed. The reserve lost a rhino to poachers in June last year while two more were killed in January this year.

Police spokesperson warrant officer Solomon Sibiya said that police were following leads but no one had been arrested.

Just two weeks ago a Vietnamese man was sentenced to 10 years in jail after being convicted of trying to smuggle rhino horns out of the counrty. The Kempton Park magistrate who handed down the sentence called for more action to be taken to curb the dramatic increase in rhino poaching in South Africa.

Bakkies out for rest of Tri Nations

Springbok lock Bakkies Botha will miss the rest of the 2010 Tri Nations rugby series after receiving a nine-week ban for headbutting Jimmy Cowan in the early part of the game played in Auckland yesterday. The incident that led to Botha's citing was not seen by the on-field match officials.

The All Black scrum half pulled on Botha's jersey as they were chasing a loose ball. Television replays show Botha butting the back of Cowan's head after he had tackled him. Botha admitted the charge.

In passing sentence Sanzar judicial officer Dennis Wheelan took Botha's previous disciplinary record into account. Botha was handed a four-week ban earlier this year for a reckless charged which kept him out of the Super 14 finals.

Botha will be able to resume playing on 5 September 2010, the day after the Sprinboks play their final Tri Nations match.
