Mutineers in court

Ten members of the crew of a Taiwanese fishing vessel appeared in the Cape Town Magitrate's Court earlier today. They allegedly commandeered the vessel, the Balena, in international waters on Monday afternoon, demanding that it enter Cape Town harbour. Members of the police's special task force boarded the vessel before dawn on Tuesday and released the captain and first officer, who had been held hostage.

The men will remain in custody until their next court appearance on 20 May. Provisional charges against the men include two of kidnapping. Prosecutor Greg Wolmarans told the court that there was a great deal of investigation to be done, and that the investigation and the process of gathering statements was made more difficult by the need to use Taiwanese, Indonesian, Chinese and Vietnamese interpreters.
