Hikes in rates, electricity and water for Joburg

Johannesburg mayor Amos Masondo today announced wide ranging tarrif increases in his proposed budget for the next financial year.

Should the budget be accepted by council tomorrow, Johannesburg rate payers can expect an 18% increase. Electricity charges are budgeted to increase by 30% with water up 18%.

Major allocations in the R26.3 billion budget are:

  • Housing - R358.5 million
  • 2010 Soccer World Cup projects -  R346.1 million
  • Transport, mainly theRea Vaya Bus Rapid Tranist project - R144.8 million
